Thank you for your interest in our study on an Apple Watch-based stress management intervention. Our goal is to evaluate the effectiveness of this intervention, professionally called heart rate biofeedback. Here’s what you need to know:
What You’ll Need:
- iPhone and Apple Watch Application: We will install a custom app on your phone via Apple's TestFlight.
- Heart Rate Monitor: If you’re near NYC or Cornell Tech campus, you can pick it up in person. Otherwise, we’ll mail it to you with a return label for easy return after the study.
Study Details:
- Duration: The study lasts for 7 days, plus an onboarding call (about 1 hour) and an offboarding call (about 1.5 hours)
- Intervention: The intervention will be automatically started and stopped. The intervention will be delivered via your Apple Watch as a subtle wrist vibration. During the intervention, you can continue your daily activities (e.g., working, studying, interacting with others, consuming media without interruption.
Process:
- Onboarding Call (1 hour):
- Schedule this once you receive the heart rate monitor.
- We’ll onboard you to the app, collect baseline heart rate data, and conduct a recorded interview about your current stress management strategies and challenges.
- You’ll also complete some questionnaires.
- Duration: About 1 hour.
- Experiment Stage (7 Days):
- Wear the heart rate monitor and connect it to the app daily.
- The monitor will collect heart rate data throughout the day. The phone will collect geolocation every 30-minutes. The geolocation is to help us understand whether the intervention works better indoor, outdoor, in busy towns or in nature.
- You might receive the intervention for 15 minutes at random times when you are stationary. If it bothers you, you can turn it off.
- You will receive random push notifications to complete a brief 3-question survey about your stress level, attention, and mental workload. Maximum 8 sets of interventions/surveys per day.
- At the end of each day, you’ll get a notification to complete a daily survey about your overall feelings.
- Offboarding Call (1.5 hour):
- Schedule this after the 7-day period.
- We’ll conduct another recorded interview about your experience and have you complete some final questionnaires.
- We’ll guide you on returning the heart rate monitor using the prepaid return package.
